With five national teams and more than 60 competitors, APUC 09 will be the largest ever regional unicycling event. Visiting teams are: Australia, Singapore, Korea and the Philippines.
Event background
This is the second biannual regional unicycle championships, after the inaugural competition in Singapore in 2007. That event grew out of bilateral unicycle hockey matches between Hong Kong, Singapore and Korea, starting in 2004.
Australia are the reigning regional unicycle hockey champions, from APUC 07. Hong Kong were runners up then, and are looking to win this time round.
This year’s event is expanded to two competitive days, with a full-day unicycle hockey tournament, featuring seven teams, and a full day of track and field events including 100m, 400m, 1600m, long jump and 50m backwards, as well as informal competitions such as unicycle sumo and longest still-stand.
APUC 09 follows the traditions of Unicon, the biannual world unicycle championships, with an international spirit of friendship. All visiting teams are based at the same accommodation, and there are social and formal events to enable participants to meet and share with unicyclists from other countries.
About the host club
The Unicycle Hong Kong club meets on Fridays at King's Park Centenary Centre to practise skills and play unicycle hockey. Members include young and old, Chinese and expatriate, men and women. Newcomers are welcome, and there are always one or two spare unicycles to try.
